CABINETRY AND FURNITURE CLASS  Fall 2008 3 days; We teach students with the intention of teaching them how to get several projects at their clients' homes. This class is an enhancement to the Professional Walls class, as it specifically teaches students how to create furniture grade finishes on cabinetry and furniture pieces. All samples are made on wood cabinet doors, to offer the client a great visual tool when selecting finishes from your portfolio. Students also learn how to tackle difficult molding edges, corners, etc. This gorgeous portfolio sells itself, offering students the opportunity to upsell their work! Take home furniture piece included in price of tuition. Learn how to create finishes on installed cabinets and furniture pieces. Join us for our SECOND ANNUAL TROMPE L' OEIL CLASS with World renowned guest instructor, Patrick Kerwin, of the Smithsonian. This in-depth, 5 day Trompe L'oeil ('to fool the eye') painting class was an instant HIT with the attendees of the August 2007 class, where students created an 8ft by 5ft painted panel, including elements of landscape, tapestry detail, painted fabric folds, tassels, etc. that looked real enough to touch! Students will learn this Master Painter's techniques for creating realistic patterned fabric panel painting, (on the 'curtains') cloud and landscape techniques through the 'window' of the scene and much more! Class includes brushes and materials necessary to complete the project, along with instruction from a World Renowned painter. ALL levels from beginners to advanced are welcome to attend this class! Patrick Kirwin is a master Trompe L' Oeil painter working within a range of sizes; both large scale murals as well as smaller easel paintings. Kirwin is concerned with the harmony between the architectural reality of the room and the painted illusion of the mural. Whereas, in the trompe l ' Oeil paintings, he presents an illusion as a reality within the room. He is currently working on a 250 foot by 8 ft mural to honor George Washington in D.C. This year long project is considered the greatest work of artistry in our Modern times. Artists throughout the ages have concerned themselves with realistic methods for painting fabrics and cloth. Early examples of these renditions occur in Egyptian paintings and Ancient Greek works, spanning throughout the paintings of Botticelli, Da Vinci, and of course Michelangelo. Kerwin's talent of taking this ancient study and putting a modern day spin on it, (including floral, linen,sheers, tapestry and more,) excites the eye and creates whimsy on a one dimensional surface. His mastery of painting depth to create a visual 'trick' concerning the differences in weight (such as the visual sheen of painted silk as opposed to the heavy look of weaved tapestry,) puts Kerwin at the top of the heap among accomplished artists of the subject. As the sole creator of this unique 'Fabric Panels' class, Kerwin's teaching style and expertise is coveted throughout the World, and we are proud to bring this level of talent to our students! Fabrics play an important part in his strategy of the illusion of space. To heighten this illusion, he has devised methods of making patterns appear to bend within folded cloth.  THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN PAINT- In most instances, "paint" as we know it, isn't even necessary to create these beautiful and stunning effects. At IWCT School of Decorative Arts', instruction for faux painting has been brought to a new level. We receive students throughout the United States and other countries alike. Faux painting is the most popular form of interior decoration, and will always be in style. Faux painting techniques, however, do tend to move in and out of style. Sponge painting and rag rolling, for example, saw their glory, but now people demand a more sophisticated and artistic faux finish. IWCT focuses on teaching finishes that are timely, current, and built to withstand the test of time. We instruct the most complete curriculm concerning the decorative paint process, taking our students from basic glazing techniques, through sophisticated stuccos. Currently, requests for Venetian Plasters abound, and students of IF WALLS COULD TALK learn the historical background of many different Venetian Plaster applications, including, Marmorino, Veneciano, Montovano, Pompeian plasters, and Asian finishes. Lime based plasters are all the rage, and faux painting students not only learn how to apply these techniques, but how to sell them. This class offers excellent techniques on pricing your work, how to do a bid, how to work with designers and clients, how to write and utilize contracts for legal support, and so much more. Students create 18-20 samples that are productive, easy to sell and create, and beautiful enough to withstand the test of time. ENTRY- LEVEL course. (Studied elsewhere? Trust that this is not a beginners class in the least; this is where students begin with us. It is recommended that students taking this class have basic knowledge of decorative painting and is strongly suggested to take the Professional Walls class prior to this class to ensure greater success.
